Catherine Ade Somerset, United Kingdom
Drawing, Lithography.
I am an artist exploring drawing and lithographic printmaking based in Bristol, UK. I run The Lemonade Press, a collaborative printmaking stufio specialising in lithography. I am the recipient of two Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Grants which allowed me to attend Tamarind Institute for Lithography Summer School and spend time on a residency in Mexico researching marble lithography. Stone lithography is considered and endangered craft by the Heritage Crafts Association, so I one of the few practitioners in the UK. I am the co-author of Lithography; An Artist's Guide, published by Crowood Press in 2023.
My work is concerned with reflecting on how to convey the internal experiences of the world. With a practice rooted in drawing and printmaking, I draw images which compel me often using the setting of domestic interiors to form structures containing narratives which play with the interconnectedness of the physical bodily sensations and emotional experiences; exploring beyond what the eyes can see. I use the lithographic printing process to collage together images; drawing on the stone and manipulating them during the processing to achieve certain affects. The stone itself has a memory of the drawing applied to it which allows the image to be transformed into a printing matrix, and once a print has been completed the image is ground off the stone and the memory erased ready for something new.
